英文常常有很多看起來很相似,或是聽起來很像的字,是不是常常感到困惑,很容易搞混呢!

《mmmEnglish》講師 Emma 在 Youtube 上面列舉了 8種容易混淆的字,一起來看看它們的中文意思及用法吧!

 

1. aloud vs. allowed

  • aloud 大聲地 adv.

ex. I’m speaking aloud right now!

我現在正大聲說話!

ex. Read that paragraph aloud so that the rest of the class can hear you!

大聲朗讀這段,這樣班上的其他人才能聽到你的聲音!

 

  • allowed 被允許 v. (allow的過去式); 合法的 adj.

ex. You are allowed to bring a small bag with you.

你可以攜帶一個小包。

ex. You are not allowed to wear shoes inside the house.

你不許在屋內穿鞋。

 

2. complement vs. compliment

  • complement 補充.增添 v.

ex. That hat really complements the dress you’re wearing. They look good together.

那帽子真的襯托出你今天穿的洋裝,它們看起來很搭。

ex. What type of cheese is this ? It really complements the favors in the fruit.

這是哪種奶酪?搭配水果真的好加分。

ex. We chose plants that would complement each other. They really suit each other.

我們選擇了植物補足彼此,它們真的很適合。

 

  • compliment 誇獎.讚賞 n. v.

ex. I want to compliment you on your performance, you did a really good job.

我想要讚揚你的表現,你做得非常好。

ex. I don’t take compliments very well. I get really shy and embarrassed and try to change the subject.

我不太敢恭維。我覺得很害羞及尷尬,想試著轉移話題。

 

3. all together vs. altogether

  • all together 全部一起

ex. Let’s meet at the roller coaster at 12pm – we want to ride it all together!

我們12點在雲霄飛車那見面 – 我們要一起騎過去!

 

  • altogether 完全.全然 ; 總之 ; 總共 adv.

ex. I’m a vegetarian now. I’ve stopped eating meat altogether!

我現在是素食主義者。我已經完全不吃肉了!

ex. Altogether, I think it’s a good decision for the company.

總而言之,我認為這對公司來說是很好的決定。

ex. Altogether you’ll pay $3,000 for your flights and accommodation.

4. desert vs. dessert

  • desert 沙漠 n.

ex. If you drive from Melbourne across Australia to Perth, you have to drive through the desert.

如果你開車從墨爾本穿越澳大利亞到珀斯,你必須穿越沙漠。

 

  • dessert 甜點 n.

ex. If you don’t finish your dinner, you won’t get your dessert!

如果你沒吃完晚餐,你就不能吃甜點!

 

5. principle vs. principal

  • principle 校長 n. ; 最重要的 adj.

ex. Our principal concern is the safety of the children.

我們主要關心的是兒童的安全。

ex. I have a meeting with the school principal this afternoon.

我今天下午和學校校長有一個會議。

 

  • principle 原則 ; 準則.道德 n.

ex. There are three main environmental principles that shaped this project.

有三個主要的環境原則塑造了這個項目。

ex. We need to protect the community, it’s a matter of principle.

6. along vs. a long

  • along 沿著 prep. ; 一起 adv.

ex. It’s such a nice night tonight! Let’s go for a walk along the river.

ex. Can I bring my friend along?

我可以帶我朋友一起嗎?

 

  • a long 長時間的.很久的 adj.

ex. It’s been such a long journey.

這是一段漫長的旅程。

ex. I walked along a long, windy road!

7. advise vs. advice

  • advice 意見.忠告 n.

ex. Hey, can I ask your advice?

嘿,我可以問問你意見嗎?

 

  • advise 勸告.忠告.提供意見 ; 告知 v.

ex. The flight attendant will advise you where the nearest exit is.

機艙服務員會告知你最近的出口在哪。

 

8. accept vs. except

  • accept 接受 v.

ex. you need to accept the Terms and Conditions.

你需要接受這條款及條件。

 

  • except 除…之外(表示不包括) prep. conj.

ex. I walk the dog every day, except Tuesdays, because I work late.

除了禮拜二之外,我每天遛狗,因為我工作到很晚。
