「blue」除了用來代表藍色之外，在英文慣用語當中也常用來指涉「憂鬱、悲傷」等情緒，例如「feeling blue」(情緒低落)、「singing the blues」(抱怨)等。
Go Natural English的講師Gabby Wallace提出了10個含有「blue」這個字的慣用語，除了悶悶不樂的涵義之外，也有許多其他日常生活中常見的實用說法喔！
1. ……until he’s blue in the face 徒勞無功
e.g. He argued with his parents until he’s blue in the face.
他與父母爭論，但仍然徒勞無功。
2. Feeling blue 悶悶不樂、情緒低落、情緒沮喪
e.g. I woke up feeling blue yesterday.
我昨天一早醒來就悶悶不樂。
3. Singing the blues 抱怨、訴苦
e.g. He’s always singing the blues about how poor he is.
他總是在抱怨他有多窮。
4. Blue chip 可靠的、收益可觀的，通常用來形容公司，也叫做藍籌
e.g. In my opinion, this company cannot become a blue-chip company.
就我的觀點來看，這間公司沒辦法成為穩定而高收益的企業。
5. Blue collar 藍領、勞工階級的
e.g. During the financial crisis, the company laid off thousands of blue-collar workers.
在金融危機期間，這間公司解僱了上千名藍領階級員工。
6. Blue blooded 貴族的、名門的
e.g. Victoria comes from a blue-blooded family.
Victoria出身貴族世家。
7. True blue 忠誠、可靠的
e.g. John’s true blue. He won’t let us down.
John很可靠，他不會讓我們失望的。
8. Once in a blue moon 千載難逢、罕見的、難得的
e.g. I go to night clubs once in a blue moon.
我幾乎不去夜店。
9. (a bolt) out of the blue 出乎意料
e.g. The news of his death was a bolt out of the blue.
他的死訊令人出乎意料。
10. Black and blue (打得)青一塊, 紫一塊、鼻青臉腫
e.g. After the fight, Josh and Edward was black and blue.
打架過後，Josh和Edward身上都有許多瘀傷。
