牽強、孤注一擲、勢均力敵、無法理解…英文應該怎麼說？你都會了嗎？《Speak English With Vanessa》講師 Vanessa 在 Youtube 上面列舉了20個常用英文片語動詞，包括pick up/mark off/give away/clash with /start out with/go with…等等。

1、to pick up 學會
to learn naturally without study 表示不透過學習自然學會
例：You’ll pick it up.
你會學會的。
例：My 5 year old daughter picked up some bad habits when she visited our neighbor’s house.
我5歲的女兒在拜訪我們鄰居的住宅時學到了一些壞習慣。
2、to be a stretch 牽強、超過限度、過分
to be far from reality 表示離現實有點遠
例：Some words are a stretch.
有些話有點牽強。
例：I know that it’s a stretch, but could you walk my dog for the next 2 weeks while I’m gone?
我知道這有點牽強，但是你能在我離開之後的兩個禮拜裡我遛狗嗎？
例：It’s going to be a stretch to finish the reports by 3pm.
在下午3點之前，要完成報告有點太誇張了吧。
3、to mark off (從清單中)劃掉
to note as “complete” 表示註記”完成”
例：I’m going to mark it off.
我就要劃掉它了。
例：I feel satisfied when I mark off items on my to-do list.
當我劃掉待辦事項上的項目時，我感到很滿意。
4、to give away 洩漏秘密
to reveal a secret 表示揭露、透露秘密
例：I can’t give it away!
我不能洩漏秘密!
例：It was amazing that none of my students gave away the Christmas surprise.
令人驚訝的是，我的學生們都沒有洩漏了聖誕節驚喜的秘密。
5、to clash with 相抵觸
to contradict or go against 表示有矛盾、互相抵觸
例：It’s not going to clash with the other words.
這不會與其他字相抵觸。
6、to start out with 開始於…
the beginning of a series of events 一系列事件的開始
例：I’m going to start out with “gear.”
我將從“齒輪”開始。
例：When you make bread, you need to start out with all of the ingredients.
製作麵包時，你需要從所有成分入手。
7、to be lame 不酷、不上道、無趣
not cool(slang) 表示不酷(俚語)
例：It’s lame of me to do this.
做這事對我來說很蠢耶。
例：My boyfriend said he was going to come at 6pm, but he didn’t come until 7.
我男朋友說他要在下午6點來，但直到7點他才來。
Wow, that’s lame!
哇，那很瞎耶!
8、to go with = to choose選擇
例：I’m going to go with “rice.”
我選擇飯。
例：I’m going to go with the daily special and a glass of wine.
我要每日特色菜和一杯葡萄酒。
例：We decided to go with the city tour instead of the museum tour.
我們決定在城市旅遊而不是博物館觀光行。
9、to use up 用完、用光
to use completely 表示完全地使用
例：We only used up two guesses.
我們只用了兩個推測。
例：If you use up the milk, please throw away the container.
你如果把牛奶用完了，請扔掉容器。
10、to jump out at 使(某人)很快地注意到
to easily see 表示很容易看到
例：Nothing is jumping out at me.
沒有什麼能吸引我的注意。
例：Dan’s red hair jumps out at you, so he is easy to find.
丹的紅頭髮很容易吸引你注意，所以很容易找到他。
11、Hail Mary 孤注一擲、使出渾身解數
final desperate chance 表示最後孤注一擲拼命的機會
例：You get a Hail Mary guess. 你最後猜對了。
例：After she broke up with him, he sent her flowers, chocolate, and a love note as a Hail Mary attempt to win her back.
在她和他分手之後，他送給她鮮花、巧克力和一張愛心紙條，當作是為挽回她最後孤注一擲的嘗試。
12、a toss-up 無法比較、機會各半、難以決定、勢均力敵
outcome cannot be predicted between two options
表示在兩個選擇之間無法預測結果
例：It’s a toss-up between “earth” and “fog.” 土壤和霧難以抉擇。
例：Both teams are playing so well. It’s a toss-up who will win.
兩隊的表現都非常好。難以預測誰會贏。
13、early on 初期、早期、剛開始
almost the same as “early” 表示幾乎與”早期的、初期的”同意思
例：It’s early on in the game. 比賽剛開始。
例：I knew early on that this lesson would help my vocabulary grow.
這堂課一開始我就知道這會幫助我的詞彙量增長。
14、to go on 發生、進行
something dramatic happening 表示戲劇性的事情發生
例：They have fist fights going on.
他們正在進行拳戰。
例：Go outside and find out what is going on.
到外面去看看發生了什麼事。
15、by the seat of your pants 憑感覺、憑經驗隨性做事
without a clear plan 表示沒有明確的計畫
例：Frogs live by the seat of your pants.
青蛙就是為了生存而活著。
例：I totally forgot about my presentation, so I just flew by the seat of your pants.
我完全忘記了我的演講，所以只好隨機行事。
16、to be hit or miss 碰運氣的、時好時壞、不準的
to have unpredictable results 產生不可預期的結果
例：Our knowledge is very hit or miss.
我們的理解真不可靠。
例：The singers new songs are really hit or miss. some are amazing and some are just okay.
歌手的新歌真的很碰運氣。有些很棒，有些還可以。
17、on the back burner 在次要位置、暫時擱置一旁
to postpone or low priority 表示延期或低優先權，不緊急或不重要
例：I’ll keep it on the back burner. 我會先把它放一放。
例：He always chooses to watch soccer, so his girlfriend feels like she is on the back burner.
他總是選擇看足球，所以他女友感覺自己像被放在次要位置。
18、to be clear cut 明確、清楚
free from doubt 表示毫無疑問
例：That’s a pretty clear cut “no.” 這毫無疑問是”不”。
例：From an early age, it was clear cut that I wouldn’t become an engineer.
從很小的時候起，我就很清楚不會成為工程師。
19、to throw off 困惑、弄糊塗
to be confused by something 表示被某事困惑、弄糊塗
例：That word is throwing me off. 那字把我弄糊塗了。
例：The robber threw off the police by putting on a disguise.
強盜藉由偽裝混淆了警察。
20、to go over your head 無法理解
to not understand a complex idea 表示難以理解一個複雜的想法、超出理解範圍
例：All the hints are going over your head. 所有提示都讓人無法理解。
例：Because I studied this lesson, these 20 expressions won’t go over your head anymore!
